For example, for this website my main key term is “SEO Melbourne“. Therefore, I need to specify this term in the important areas of my site that Google looks at – this of course are the Meta Tags.

The three Meta Tags of highest importance are:

<meta name=“keywords” />
<meta name=“description” />
<title></title>

Getting to these Meta Tags in Wordpress can be quite tricky to the uninformed but have no fear, there’s a Wordpress plugin that allows you to update these Meta Tags in minutes.

How do I check my Meta Tags now?
You can check what’s currently in your Meta Tags by simply right-clicking at the home page of your website (Firefox & IE) then select “View Page Source”.  It will then display HTML that defines your page. As an example, if you do this on http://www.aranezmedia.com, you’ll see:

These of course are the first couple of lines only.  See how “SEO Melbourne” appears in each of the 3 tags? This tells Google that “SEO Melbourne” is a major topic on my website therefore should include this whenever someone searches for “SEO Melbourne” in Google. Adding your keywords will not guarantee that you will automatically appear as Number #1 for that keyword, however it’s a great start.

Adding Meta Tags in Wordpress via All-In-One SEO Wordpress Plugin

I quickly added these keywords into the Meta Tags in Wordpress via the All-In-One-SEO Wordpress Plugin. Here are some simple steps on how to update the Meta Tags via this handy plugin:

  1. Click on the link to see information and download it to your /wp-content/plugins/ folder.
  2. Activate the All-In-One SEO Plugin in the Wordpress admin section
  3. Open up All-In-One SEO config area via Settings > All in One SEO.
  4. Fill in your Meta Tags
  5. Save and voila! (we’ll talk about the other settings some other time)
  6. Go back to your home page and check that focused Meta Tags based are now in place (remember right-click).
